Turns out it was a bonfire on a farm.
(We weren't the only ones who came to check it out. Things like this excite us suburban people who live in quiet neighborhoods.)

Lol! everyone looks when there's a fire. When I burn old grass and weeds and things get slow I watch the people that drive by in their cars/truck/etc ( I live on a heavy traveled Highway that goes down to the power plant). Everyone looks, to no fail they all look and watch. I think we all love fire. Hell I think more than most would just watch the world burn instead of doing something about it.

My parents did this; I was forced to come along with them, but it was still interesting...
...Because an actual house in our neighborhood was burned down, and now it's a really popular place to check out. It happens a lot here for some reason.
